Hot Deal: First Blu-ray Disc Player Available for Under $200

philips For those people who've been wanting a Blu-ray disc movie player but have been put off by the prices, Philips may have the deal for you.  From now through December 10, the Philips Outlet store has refurbished BDP9000 Blu-ray disc players available for the ridiculously low price of $199.99 with free shipping.

The Philips BDP9000 is based on the Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray disc player and is a first-gen model.  As such, there is no support for upcoming Profile 1.1 features such as PIP, advanced audio codecs, or 1080p24 output.  It also will take longer to load discs with advanced BD-J features than on some newer players.  But for only $199, it makes for an excellent second room player, or an alternative to the low-end Toshiba HD DVD players.

Officially, the sale is for Philips employees, as well as their friends and family.  But I am friends with a Philips employee and you're all my friends... so there you go.

To order, go to to the Philips Outlet site, select the BDP9000 Blu-ray disc player, and use coupon code OUTLET-1207 at checkout.  As these are refurbished players, only a 90 day warranty will apply.

Blu-ray vs. HD DVD: Nielson VideoScan Comparison for Week Ending 11/25/07

Every week Home Media Magazine reports the latest Nielson VideoScan numbers for the Blu-ray vs. HD DVD battle.  They include three figures: Weekly, Year-to-date, and Since Inception.  Weekly numbers examine discs sold at retail over the course of just the current week, the YTD numbers look at sales from the first week ending in 2007 to the present, and the since inception numbers show the relative performance of Blu-ray and HD DVD discs since the formats' respective births.

Nielson VideoScan Data for Week Ending 11/25/07

hd 11-25

Source: Nielson VideoScan via http://www.homemediamagazine.com/

Weekly sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 72% to 38%, 100:38.9, or 2.57:1

YTD sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 65% to 35%, 100:53.8, or 1.86:1

Since Inception sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 62% to 38%, 100:61.3, or 1.63:1

There's an awful lot of Blu on this week's graph, which is great news in any week.  Given that this data is for Thanksgiving week, and includes the Black Friday sales, these numbers mean far more than in most other weeks.  The number of discs sold was actually enough to push the since inception numbers another 1% in Blu's favor... no small feat these days.  If Blu can keep this up through the holidays, we may soon be able to put this whole war behind us...  I know that's my Christmas wish.

Although it didn't pull "SpiderMan 3" or "300"-type numbers, "Live Free or Die Hard" solidly led the pack of titles for last week.  Interestingly, a give away offer of "Open Season" at Best Buy made that title soar to the second position for this week.  Rounding out the Top 10, 8 titles are Blu, only 2 are HD DVD.  Also, both Sony's "Open Season" and Pixar's "Ratatouille" outsold "Shrek the Third" on HD DVD quite solidly, despite Shrek being the newest of the titles.  All in all, it's very nice news for Thanksgiving weekend.

News: PlayStation 3 Sales up Nearly 300% Since Price Cut

PS3_4 In what must be shocking news to those convinced Sony's latest game console was doomed in the current generation's console race, SCEA today released statistics showing a fantastic increase in sales since the November 2 release of the $399 40GB PS3 and the price cut to $499 for the 80GB PS3.

Overall, PS3 hardware sales have increased 298% compared to previous weeks' sales data.  The numbers for this years' Black Friday weekend sales are also up 245% compared to last years' sales, though that can largely be attributed to the fact that it was next to impossible to find a PS3 last year.

This is certainly good news for Sony all around, who has been badly needing to jumpstart sales of the PS3 in the United States.  With the recent release of some AAA-grade gaming titles, the continuing dominance of the Blu-ray disc movie format, and now a much more reasonable cost of entry, the PS3 may end up being a huge winner on all fronts this holiday season.

Onkyo Releases HD DVD Player... or not

bd hd dvd Well, the much ballyhooed and long-awaited Onkyo HD DVD player that was shown off at last January's CES has hit the streets... just don't plan on ever buying one (then again, if you read my blog, you almost certainly wouldn't buy one anyway).

Onkyo has released a trickle of their DV-HD805 HD DVD players into the market... and it's a force to be reckoned with.  While no one knows exactly how many of these players are making their way to store shelves, one would guess it would be in the millions.  Or not.  Apparently, 20 players made it to Germany, 11 to Italy, and none to Spain.  Those aren't numbers in thousands... those are the actual numbers.  And the player is already officially out of production!

Apparently, Onkyo wasn't too pleased with Toshiba's latest pricing moves on HD DVD players, and decided there was no money to be made competing in that market.  Most likely, the few players released were to satisfy some contractual obligation to put the player out there.  What's even sadder about that is that the Onkyo player was essentially a rebadged Toshiba HD-XE1.    So Onkyo couldn't make any money producing HD DVD players that Toshiba designed for them!

For the few dozen new Onkyo HD DVD owners out there, I hope the players use Toshiba firmware, otherwise your players may become paperweights even faster than they were going to otherwise.  For everyone else... keep in mind, Toshiba is once again the ONLY major CE company manufacturing HD DVD players.  The only question left is how long can they manage to hold out being the only ones in the game?

Blu-ray vs. HD DVD: Nielson VideoScan Comparison for Week Ending 11/18/07

Nielson VideoScan Data for Week Ending 11/18/07

Source: Nielson VideoScan via http://www.homemediamagazine.com/

Weekly sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 66% to 34%, 100:51.5, or 1.94:1

YTD sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 65% to 35%, 100:53.8, or 1.86:1

Since Inception sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 61% to 39%, 100:63.9, or 1.56:1

Well, another essentially 2:1 win for Blu-ray.  You know if HD DVD were winning 2:1 every week, all anyone would hear about is how Blu-ray should just turn over and die.  Instead, we are forced to keep listening to nonsense about how HD DVD has "momentum" right now.  What momentum, I don't know.  They haven't budged their percentage toward their favor all year.  This week it must be especially depressing for them, given that one of their "big" exclusives Shrek 3 was released.  But have no fear... as always, I'm sure they're working overtime coming up with excuses as to how that happened.

Source: Nielson VideoScan via http://www.homemediamagazine.com/

I love it when Home Media Magazine is nice enough to post YTD Top 10 lists.  It must be so humbling for the HD DVD fans out there.  A couple of things are very interesting about this chart.  The first thing is that only 3 of the Top 10 titles are HD DVD titles, and of those, 2 of them are also available on Blu-ray.  The second thing worth mentioning is just how far away from 300's Blu-ray record Transformers actually is.  Paramount can make up fake sales statements all year long, but its good to know that Nielson is there to provide some actual data.

Blu-ray Disc Player Holiday Shopping Guide

bluray4 Although I already have a section devoted to all the available Blu-ray Disc players available in the U.S. here, I still get asked frequently what the best Blu-ray Disc player is to buy this holiday.  While no one player is right for everyone, it's good to have some basic information before you head into the stores.

Option 1: Sony PS3 (40GB for $399 or 80GB for $499)

Although it's primary function is playing videogames, Sony's PS3 does an excellent job at it's second-duty... playing Blu-ray disc and DVD movies.  It can output PCM and decoded Dolby TrueHD audio via HDMI, and should be getting an update soon for Profile 1.1 (ie, PIP) functionality.

Who it's for: Gamers, tehnophiles, anyone who wants all the features now and in the future

Who should avoid it: Those who hate the idea of a videogame system as their movie player, those who want full remote integration with their home theatre, and anyone needing multichannel analog audio outputs

Option 2: Panasonic BD30 ($499)

Panasonic's new BD30 is just now hitting stores, and wins the award for the first player to feature Profile 1.1 compatibility.  Excellent video quality and bitstream audio output round out the fantastic package.

Who it's for: Those who want a full-featured player that's not a videogame system

Who should avoid it: Those with receivers that cannot decode Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA, and need a player that can do that

Option 3: Pioneer Elite BDP-95HD ($999)

Pioneer's latest entry into the BD player market retains the previous generation's excellent video and build quality while adding bitstream audio output to compatible receivers.  Though it lacks the new Profile 1.1 compatibility, the overall image and audio quality is second-to-none.  As with other Pioneer Elite products, this player is only available at select retailers.

Who it's for: Those who want the absolute best video and audio quality from their Blu-ray Discs, and who don't mind the price

Who should avoid it: Bargain-shoppers; those seeking Profile 1.1 compatibility

Option 4: Discount Players ($399 or less)

This being the bargain shopping season, many will of course opt for one of the discounted BD players being advertised at stores around the country.  While none of these players feature Profile 1.1 compatibility, they do allow playback of Blu-ray discs in full 1080p quality at unprecedented low prices.  Prices as low as $330 or bundles including several additional free movies are common on these models this year.  The models available in this discounted price range are the Sony BDP-S300, the Samsung BD-P1400, and the Sharp Aquos BD-HP20S.  Among these, only the Samsung can bitstream out all HD audio codecs to compatible receivers, but video quality and other features are similar between these models.

Who they're for: Those looking for the best possible price on a Blu-ray disc player this holiday, or those looking to get a second BD player for another room in their house

Who should avoid them: Those seeking Profile 1.1 compatibility or more advanced audio and video processing found in higher end units.

I hope that helps those searching for the perfect Blu-ray Disc player for themselves or a loved one this holiday.  Also, whatever Blu-ray player you get, don't forget to send in for your 5 free movies by mail!

Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 Goes Gold!

unreal3 Well, the game that has sparked considerable outrage amongst the XBox 360 crowd, and produced enough FUD to fill a presidential debate has been delayed until... what... it's not delayed?  Oh, oops.  It's actually done!

That's right... Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 has gone gold and is set to hit stores on December 11, in the United States.  The PS3 version will allow the installation of any mods created for the PC version, though cross-platform gameplay is not enabled as the two versions would always have to be updated together to ensure compatibility.

Equally important for PlayStation 3 owners and game developers, is that the Unreal 3 engine has been fully ported to the PS3, taking full advantage of the advanced hardware capabilities of the system.  As MANY of the big upcoming games are using the Unreal 3 engine, this should ease the pain of development for game creators and hopefully put an end to the constant delays of games coming out on the PS3.

A possible Xbox 360 port has not been announced at this time.

New Site

Welcome to the new site!

Most of the content from my old blog has been ported over to this new space now, which I think is much easier to view and navigate than the previous site.

The master lists of Blu-ray titles, Blu-ray Disc players, PS3 games, etc, are still readily accessible from the navigation bar on the right, and will continue to be updated weekly.  All posts can now be accessed from the main page, and can be sorted by category or date.  The advertising links to Amazon are also far less intrusive than the previous ones.

With the migration now complete, I hope to be able to spend more time actually providing content here and on various online forums, and far less time trying to make the old blog function in ways that it was never designed to function.

I hope everyone enjoys the new site and finds it a useful resource.  Thank for visiting.

Rant: Why Blu-ray Manufacturer's Don't Need to Give Away Free Players

blurayvhddvd3 Some people -- mainly those on the red side, but some on the Blu as well -- seem to feel that this is the only issue in this format "war," or at least the main one that will end up mattering. Personally, I just don't see how this is the case. If the goal is to get a Blu-ray player into the home of everyone in the world in 2007, then yes, substantially lowering the player prices would be a necessity. But manufacturers are looking at the situation long-term, and their instincts have proven right thus far.

No new media format has EVER fallen in price as fast as HD DVD has. There are many reasons why... the main one being that R&D costs don't recoup themselves within the first six months of a new product. Massive price cuts like Toshiba has done are the tactics of the desperate... not of the successful. If Toshiba had any other major manufacturers on board making HD DVD players they quite simply couldn't lower prices as quickly as they have (for no other manufacturer would be willing to take the financial "hit" Toshiba is), and by cutting their margins down to nothing (or selling at a loss) they are essentially guaranteeing that no other major manufacturer will join their camp.

The BDA has MANY manufacturers producing players, and if one member started selling players below cost, many other manufacturers would likely jump ship overnight. The manufacturers are all doing a fantastic job at lowering component and prodcution costs as each generation passes, but releasing below-cost players would kill other companies, and set consumer expectations so that others might never be able to profit from player sales.

You can already see this with Toshiba. There is already a feeling that spending more than $100 on an HD DVD player is just dumb for the consumer, and for a store to charge more than $200 for a player is highway robbery. And of course, you'd better get a half dozen or more free movies in the deal. Why in the world would ANY other company want to make these things given the non-existant profit potential at those prices. HD DVD is no longer fighting to become the next generation replacement for DVD... it is fighting just to keep the competition from doing the same. Toshiba is earning far too much from regular DVD to let BD replace it, and they're going to insane lengths to prevent that from happening.

The position the BDA is in affords them the ability to proceed with an eye on the end-game. This isn't "make it or break it" time for BD as it is for HD DVD. BD has, for all intents and purposes, already made it. There are approximately 6 million PS3's in people's homes worldwide. Now, at this point, only a minority of those are actually being used to watch BD movies on, but as time goes on, that will certainly change. And, as PS3 sales grow, the potential market for HD DVD continues to shrink. After all, whether someone uses their PS3 for BD movies or not, there's virtually no chance of them completely foregoing the BD movie capabilities of the PS3 and then going out and buying an HD DVD player. It would make NO sense to do so.

As it stands, no matter what Toshiba does with their player pricing, Blu-ray standalones sell just about the same as HD DVD standalones, though the cost of the cheapest models are substantially higher for Blu-ray. And, of course, that's only in the U.S. -- worldwide Blu-ray player sales far exceed HD DVD player sales. Likewise, Blu-ray recorders, Blu-ray PC drives, Blu-ray camcorders, and, oh yeah the PS3, FAR outsell there HD DVD counterparts (where such counterparts even exist).

Again, Blu-ray is setting itself up to be the next (and possibly last) major optical disc format. It's uses go far beyond movie playback already. That's not a promise of recorders and other uses scheduled for some time in the distant future as with HD DVD, that's all here NOW. And there hasn't even been a real push by Toshiba or Microsoft lately to attempt to counter Blu-ray as an overall disc medium... just in the movie realm.

As far as Warner is concerned, there's WAY too much speculation on what they may be thinking, and about how they are going to look at one metric but not any others, etc. Warner isn't going to make a decision without having ALL the data... they're not stupid. Most importantly, they know what the effect will be of them choosing a side. If they go HD DVD exclusive, it would produce a stalemate, and we'd all be stuck with combo players as the norm. If they stay neutral, the war will eventually work itself out, and they won't be "to blame" one way or the other. If they go Blu-ray exclusive, they will effectively end this war within a fairly short time frame, but will enrage many early adopters who chose HD DVD. Whatever they choose to do they will pick a metric to cite as their reasoning, but the actual decision will have little to do with player prices, or attach rates, or anything else everyone cites. It will be based on what role they really want to play in this format war. Until they decide that, we should all just be happy to know that we're winning, and have been for some time. The other side will continue to make desperate plays, but, as we're already seeing, they don't seem to make a bit of difference in terms of actual sales. So let them. And just pity the poor people who buy a dirt cheap HD DVD player and find that they have nothing to play on it a couple of years from now.

NPD Group Releases October, 2007 U.S. Console Sales Numbers

NPD has released their console sales numbers for the U.S., for October, 2007.  The next-gen console sales for the month were:

XBox 360: 366,000

PS3: 121,000

Wii: 519,000

Well, I predicted it last month, but as expeccted the PS3's number for October were not too encouraging.  With the new 40GB model released at $399 on November 2, and a $100 price cut on the 80GB model at the same time, potential purchasers naturally stayed away from the system once word leaked out in October.  Microsoft's 1 month reign as the top selling console came to an abrupt end, once Halo 3 had reached the masses, and Nintendo regained it's top spot by a considerable margin.

month 12

We now have 1 year data on all three consoles, as the PS3 and Wii have finally hit their twelve month mark.  The PS3 managed around 2 million unit sold in the U.S. in it's first year, the XBox 360 a little shy of 3 million, and, of course, the Wii ran away with the prize, at 5 million units sold.  Anecdotal retailer reports suggest that PS3 system sales are up between 200 and 300% since the price cut.  Add that to the recent spurt of excellent games and the holiday shopping season, and the PS3 is in a position to make a big move over the next couple of months.

Obviously, the XBox 360 has been out considerably longer than the other consoles, so in the interests of fairness, here is a chart that shows the total sales of the consoles over their lifetimes.

consoles 10-07

Microsoft's lead in the U,S, market is shrinking each month with the Wii seemingly unstoppable at this point.  The question at this point is when, no if, the Wii will take the U.S. lead from Microsoft.  A lot of estimates exist, but since the only thing that has stopped it from happening already is the lack of available Wii systems at various points in time, it's really anyone's guess.

If you still don't have a PS3 (and there's a lot of you out there), be on the look-out for some excellent deals over the next two months as stores put together holiday bundles to help drive sales.

Blu-ray vs. HD DVD: Nielson VideoScan Comparison for Week Ending 11/11/07

Nielson VideoScan Data for Week Ending 11/11/07

hd 11-11

Source: Nielson VideoScan via http://www.homemediamagazine.com/

Weekly sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 65% to 35%, 100:53.8, or 1.86:1

YTD sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 64% to 36%, 100:53.8, or 1.86:1

Since Inception sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 61% to 39%, 100:63.9, or 1.56:1

Am I the only who's starting to find this whole war becoming rather repetitive?  Another week, another essentially 2:1 victory for Blu-ray.  HD DVD still hasn't won a week all year, and Blu-ray still hasn't pulled out quite far enough to kill off its rival completely.  Someone needs to take HD DVD off life support so we can all stop watching the weekly trends like something new might happen.  Hopefully, after Q4 is over, we can officially call this "war" over.

And again, 7 of the top 10 HD titles are Blu-ray discs, furthering showing the strength of the format and its studios.  The only neutral studio, Warner, only managed one spot on the list this week, and it was, of course, for a Blu-ray title, and an aging one at that.  It's good to see all the Pixar films doing extremely well on Blu, and even another Disney animated film making the top 10 even though its a few weeks old now.  Anyone who thinks Disney's "vote" doesn't matter really should check out these numbers.

Weekly sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 71% to 29%, 100:40.8, or 2.45:1

YTD sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 64% to 36%, 100:56.3, or 1.78:1

Since Inception sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 61% to 39%, 100:63.9, or 1.56:1

Now, that's how you launch a blockbuster!  With the release of SpiderMan 3 on Blu-ray, Blu-ray discs managed to outsell HD DVD discs--selling almost 2 1/2 times as many discs.  With less than two months left in the year, it's worth noting that Blu-ray discs have outsold HD DVD discs EVERY SINGLE WEEK this year.  Given the big-name releases coming in the last couple of months of the year, hopefully Blu-ray can sustain incredible numbers like those seen in this data.

In case the overall numbers weren't enough to show the strength of Blu-ray right now, then by all means look at the Top 10 data for last week.  9 out of the Top 10 discs are Blu-ray Discs, with only the Transformers on HD DVD making it into the Top 10.  Even more impressive, 4 Warner titles (the only major neutral studio left) made the Top 10, and only the Blu-ray versions of these titles ranked.  Hopefully, someone at Warner is paying attention to these numbers.

Also, notice how well the SpiderMan boxed set did.  Most people assumed the 3rd film would do extremely well, but not many had counted on such strong sales for the more expensive three film collection.  Next week's data should show the strength of Disney's Pixar titles on Blu-ray, while the following week will be a head's up match of the Ocean's titles on both formats.  It's looking to be a very Blu Christmas!

News: Sony PlayStation 3 40GB DOES Use 65nm Cell after all

cell3 After much back and forth bickering within the tech community, Kazuo Hirai (president of SCEI) has finally confirmed what many had long suspected... that the new 40 GB PS3 model uses a new Cell processor built on a 65nm process.  While this doesn't make the new PS3 model any faster than previous models, it does allow it to consume approximately 100 Watts less of electricity when running at full load, and operate 6 dB quieter than the earlier PS3 models.

Even the earliest PS3 models ran considerably quieter than the most of the competing XBox 360 systems did, but given the PS3's use as a Blu-ray movie player, many home theatre fans found the device too loud for their liking for media playback.  This new revision should bring the sound levels much more in line with other high-end home theatre products.  It will hopefully be viewed favorably by environmentalists as well, as it uses considerably less power than the earlier PS3 system's did.

Hirai also stated that the new processor revision will start being used in the higher end 80 GB model in the future.  As of now, the Nividia RSX GPU in the new PS3's is still being built using a 90nm process.

News: PS3 System Software Hits Version 2.00

ps3_33 Well, after months of speculation as to when the 2.00 update of Sony's PlayStation 3 system software would hit and what improvements it would include, Sony Computer Entertainment finally released the update to the masses late last night. So, can we all now bask in the glory of in-game XMB, PIP features on Blu-ray and DTS-HD decoding?  In a word... no.  But the update is still a very nice update that addresses some other pressing issues.  New features that did make it into System Software 2.00 include:

  • Custom themes: the ability to change the background and icons for the XMB
  • Playlists for music and photos (finally)
  • Information Board: an RSS-type news banner providing the user with the latest PlayStation news
  • Playstation Network Category: reorganization for Playstation Store and account management features
  • Remote Start: a PSP can now be used to turn on a PS3 via an internet connection
  • Group content: music, video, and photo files can now be organized by the user
  • PlayStation Eye can nbow be used for video chat
  • Support for vibration function of the upcoming Dualshock 3 controllers
  • Trend Micro Web Security for the PS3 is now available for web browsing
  • Video content can now be viewed while it is being downloaded

All in all, an important (if underwhelming) update.  Hopefully, the big 3 requests mentioned will make into updates in the near future.  But, for now, 2.00 does prove a nice update overall.

News: SpiderMan 3 on Blu-ray Beats Transformers on HD DVD first week sales!

Spiderman3DVDBluRay3 According to numbers released today by the studio, 130,000 copies of SpiderMan 3 on Blu-ray Disc sold in the first 6 days of availability, making the title Sony Pictures fastest selling Blu-ray disc to date!  At this time it is unclear if this refers to only the SpiderMan 3 disc or both the single film and the three movie boxed set.  Either way, this would likely place SpiderMan 3 second to Warner Brothers 300 among the fastest selling high definition titles.

Last week, of course, Paramount shocked the world, announcing that Transformers had sold 190,000 copies on HD DVD in its first week of release.  Unfortunately for them, when the actual Nielson numbers came out, the number was actually 115,000... almost 40% less than Paramount had initially claimed.  Oops.  Assuming Sony learned from Paramount's mistake, it seems likely that they are basing their sales numbers on the actual NPD figures... rather than throwing darts as some studios apparently do.

News: PS3 40GB Now Available!

PS3_41 As we enter the holiday season, the two big 'wars' set to be fought in stores across the country this year are definitely the console wars and the HD disc wars.  Sony's biggest entry into both wars is undoubtedly the PS3, the hybrid beast that promises to be all things to all people.  While the PS3 certainly ignited the HD disc wars, and ensured Blu-ray's rapid rise last fall, it came at a huge cost to Sony's gaming division.  While an immensely powerful gaming system, the PS3 has suffered since its release... partially due to numerous big-name game delays... but moreso because of it's incredibly high price point.

Sony, of course, is not one to settle for third place in the console wars, so analysts have long been saying that price cuts would be inevitable.  Although Sony already dropped the price of its original 60GB system earlier this summer, it still kept the base price of the system at a hefty $499.

Finally, that situation is changing.  As of yesterday, a new 40GB PS3 model is now available on store shelves for a less bankrupting $399, and the price of the 80GB bundle is dropped to $499.  So, for those who've been waiting to jump onto the PS3 bandwagon, here's a breakdown between the two systems that will be available this fall:

Model 40GB PS3 80GB PS3
Price $399 $499
Hard Drive 40GB 80GB
Bundle Spiderman 3 movie on BD Motorstorm PS3 game
Controller Bluetooth Bluetooth
Wifi Yes Yes
USB ports 2 4
5 Free BD movie offer Yes Yes
Disc support
PS3 Games Yes Yes
PS2 Games No Yes
PS1 Games Yes Yes
BD Movies Yes Yes
DVD Movies Yes Yes
Super Audio CDs No Yes
CDs Yes Yes

As you can see, the hardware differences between the systems go beyond simply having a smaller hard drive.  There are also 2 less USB ports, no backwards compatibility for PS2 games, and no support for playing back SA-CD discs.  In all honesty, the 80GB PS3 is seems much better from a value perspective (Motorstorm alone retails for $59.99), especially considering the huge library of PS2 games out there.  Of course, if you have no intention of playing PS2 games (or simply want a system to use as a Blu-ray disc player, then the 40GB becomes an excellent value.

Whichever system meets your needs, it's definitely nice to see system prices coming down in time for the holidays.  If you do choose to pick up a system this holiday season, be sure to take advantage of the current 5 Free BD movie offer available with purchase of either system as well.  Now, let's see them get the games out there!

Blu-ray vs. HD DVD: Nielson VideoScan Comparison for Week Ending 10/28/07

Weekly sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 55% to 45%, 100:81.8, or 1.22:1

YTD sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 64% to 36%, 100:56.3, or 1.78:1

Since Inception sales: Blu-ray leads HD DVD 60% to 40%, 100:66.7, or 1.5:1

An overall so-so week, with no huge new releases on either side.  With Transformers being the only major release of last week, the numbers show HD DVD in a better light than it has looked most of the year.  Next week will mark the release of the Blu-ray juggernaut Spiderman 3, so HD DVDs main time to shine will have come and gone with not a single weekly victory to show as a result.

While a few new Blu-ray titles bowed last week, Transformers remained the dominant title.  Most of the rest of the list are just older catalog titles.  Disappointingly, none of the new Stanley Kubrick titles made the top 10 list, probably because of Warner's recent distribution problems causing delays in getting the titles actually out to stores.  Hopefully, those excellent titles will make an appearance next week, though catalog titles never do particularly well.

News: Hollywood writer's set to strike on Monday

wgaw Well, everyone in Hollywood has been expecting it for awhile, but WGA's negotiating committee announced its strike recommendation today, with an expected start date of Monday.

While not directly related to Blu-ray, the effect this will have on TV, movies, etc, could be far-reaching.
To start with, expect late night shows, such Leno, Letterman, Conan, The Daily Show, the Colbert Report, Saturday Night Live, etc, to all go into repeats starting Monday. This could last for many weeks to months. The late night shows may come back before the end of the strike, though the hosts are members of the guild, so they likely couldn't write monologues or other material.

Other scripted TV shows will be effected shortly, with most shows having 4-5 episodes ready to air. More episodes have been written, but without having writers on-set for rewrites, and the prospect of crossing picket lines, it's unlikely production companies will decide to continue shooting episodes... unless the strike continues for a considerable time.

And on the film side of things, studios have 50 or so scripts "ready to shoot," during the strike, though they would have to do without a WGA writer on-set to make changes on-the-fly.

In the end, this will be bad for everyone. Consumers will have less scripted entertainment options (and likely what options remain will be of lower quality), and we'll all be seeing more "Event TV" and reality shows on the airwaves in the coming months. Production companies, TV networks, and studios all stand to lose a lot of money if the strike continues for some time. TV networks will be hit the hardest (as they were in the 22 week WGA strike back in 1988), and may never completely recover (networks saw a 10% erosion in audience numbers post-strike in 1988). And everyone else who works in Hollywood will be seeing less work, less pay, and potentially significant layoffs.

Hopefully, they'll reach an agreement on a new contract soon, but for now, it's going to be some dark times ahead.
