Sony releases PS3 Firmware 1.80!

PS3_4 Although not as cool sounding as the rumored 2.0 system update, Sony's new 1.8 update bring a myriad of oft-requested features to the PS3.  Many of the features center around scaling capabilities and media playback capabilities.

Among the cooler updates:

  • Upscaling of PS and PS2 games to 1080p/1080i/720p (over component or HDMI)
  • Upscaling of DVD movies to 1080p/1080i/720p (over HDMI only)
  • 720p output of Blu-ray movies
  • 1080p/24fps output of Blu-ray discs
  • Expanded color range options for HDMI (digital component or RGB) output
  • DNLA media receiver capability
  • PSP media streaming anywhere in the world
  • Ability to copy PS/PS2 game saves back to a PS/PS2 memory card using a memory card adapter
  • Photo viewing and editing enhancements -- also, ability to print photos to select Epson printers

Overall, this is probably the biggest PS3 system update yet, turning the PS3 into the ultimate media machine.  Although the upscaling capabilities have been long rumored, the 24fps Blu-ray output and photo printing are a great surprise.

Later this weekend, I hope to post a guide on how to set-up the new DLNA media sharing capabilities, using either Windows Media Player 11 or Nero Media Home.
