Unlike the desktop drives, notebook BD drives are sold only as OEM drives, and are much harder to come by unless you are a large OEM. Still, some online retailers and Ebay sellers have the bare drives that can be installed into many newer notebook models. Be aware that Toshiba, Apple, and some smaller vendors use a different size optical drive than the industry standard, so standard aftermarket drives will not fit into those models.

Panasonic UJ-210 (tray) and UJ-215 (slot) drives -- Firmware must be acquired from PC vendor/OEM
Panasonic's UJ-210 and UJ-215 Blu-ray drives for notebook PCs are available from a number of PC vendors (Sony, Dell, etc.) in their Blu-ray enabled notebooks, but aren't available in retail channels. Playback speed of Blu-ray discs is fast enough for movie playback, but recording speed of Blu-ray discs is quite slow at only 1x transfer rate.

Panasonic's UJ-110 BD drive mirrors most of the features of the UJ-210 drive, accept that it only has the ability to read BD media, while its more expensive sibling can write to BD-R/RE media as well.

Optiarc, the new joint Sony/NEC optical drive venture, has released its first Blu-ray laptop drives, the BC-5500A (EIDE interface) and BC-5500S (SATA interface). The drives feature the ability to read Blu-ray discs, and read and write DVD and CD discs.
