News: Pioneer Announces Second Generation Blu-ray Player

Pioneer Electronics announced today a new Blu-ray player in its high-end "Elite" consumer electronics line.  The new model, the Pioneer Elite BDP-94HD, replaces the existing BDP-HD1, which was Pioneer's first Blu-ray A/V player.  The new model offers advanced features such as internal Dolby TrueHD decoding, HDMI Consumer Electronics Control compatibility, and advanced home networking capabilities.  The BDP-94HD is expected to be available at selected premium retailers later this month and will retail for $1000 ($500 less than the HD1).  Included in the price is a two year warranty as well as two free Blu-ray discs.

The impressive feature sets and lower prices of the second-generation Blu-ray players are going a long way toward bringing Blu-ray to the masses.  With the Pioneer and Samsung second-gen players on store shelves now or by the end of the month, and the new Sony player set to hit this summer, the coming months are looking great for stand-alone player sales.  The biggest push of stand-alone players, though, won't likely come until third-generation players with BDJ-1.1 (PIP capability) and BD-Live (internet connectivity) hit store shelves.
